Starting seeds: indoors vs direct sowing

There are two ways to begin a sunflower — sow it straight into the ground, or give it a head start indoors. Here's how to choose, and how to do each well.

Sowing direct (outdoors)

The simplest way, and often the best — sunflowers dislike having their roots disturbed, so sowing where they'll grow avoids any transplant setback.

Starting indoors

Worth it if you have a short or cold season, or if slugs devour every seedling you sow outside — you get a head start and skip the most vulnerable stage.

Which should you choose?

Warm climate or long season → sow direct. Cold, short season, or lots of slugs → start indoors for a head start. Either way, sow a few spare seeds to replace any losses.

Germination basics

Sunflower seeds like warmth (around 18–25 °C) and moist — not soggy — soil, and usually sprout in 7–14 days.
