How to take a great sunflower photo

A good photo makes your entry shine on the feed and gives you the edge in the beauty contest. You only need your phone โ€” just a few simple tricks.

Chase the right light

Soft, warm light flatters flowers. Shoot in the early morning or late afternoon ("golden hour") rather than harsh midday sun, which casts hard shadows and blows out the yellows. Backlighting โ€” sun behind the flower โ€” makes the petals glow.

Get the angle right

Keep the background clean

A busy background fights with your flower. Aim for sky, greenery or a simple wall behind it. Move around until the backdrop is tidy.

Show the scale

For height entries, include something for scale โ€” a hand, a person, or your tape measure. It makes a big number believable and far more impressive.
