Soft, warm light flatters flowers. Shoot in the early morning or late afternoon ("golden hour") rather than harsh midday sun, which casts hard shadows and blows out the yellows. Backlighting — sun behind the flower — makes the petals glow.
A busy background fights with your flower. Aim for sky, greenery or a simple wall behind it. Move around until the backdrop is tidy.
For height entries, include something for scale — a hand, a person, or your tape measure. It makes a big number believable and far more impressive.
