How to grow a tall sunflower

Height is part genetics, part care. Get these basics right and you'll give your sunflower every chance to tower.

The tall-sunflower checklist

Common problems

Leaning or falling over

Usually wind or a shallow root system. Stake early, and next time improve the soil depth and water deeply to encourage roots to go down.

Tall but spindly and weak

Often too little light or too much nitrogen late on. Give more sun, and ease off high-nitrogen feed once the bud forms.

Yellowing leaves

Can be overwatering, poor drainage or hunger. Check the soil isn't waterlogged and give a balanced feed.
